After many sketches started this week, all of which need more work, I decided to redo a piece I completed in March for the topic 'Stir'. I did the original illustration before I had good quality paper or paint and I was unhappy with the colours I used in the end. I'm much more satisfied this time.
This is the old illustration. I can think of it as a draft now. Do you think it is beneficial to redo old pieces? Do you ever do it?
I prefer your new version..everything seems better proportioned somehow..for me the colours also work better as a more neutral pallette! Reworking is part of the process of arriving at the image you want in the end.
ReplyDeleteHannah, I'm with Rod... I prefer your new version! The neutral background makes the action inside pop and viewer can truly feel the night hovering. Wonderful! And I don't revisit things much, and I should. I think it's a great exercise, but I always feel like I'm not moving forward when I go back... but you've inspired me to do some reworking.
ReplyDeleteAnd, as always, thank you for your messages on my blog. It means a lot! I've been remiss in drawing, and I vowed yesterday to get drawing daily again, and knowing other artists especially down under look and appreciate what goes up is truly energizing. Thank you! Penny
Thanks for your very thoughtful comments Rod and Penny! It's nice to know it was worth the time and effort. I do feel a bit like revisiting pieces is like going backwards and it hasn't really worked for me in the past but seems to have been beneficial this time.
ReplyDeleteHannah - this is LOVELY! Such a charming take on the theme, the shadows are absolutely integral to the story of this piece… love to see that come through in an IF noun theme (as opposed to just drawing the noun - USING it). Also like to see you trying again with an older idea (although I haven't seen the older piece) - that's Illustration Friday coming through and making you challenge yourself! Awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful work and love both versions! A bit more shadow power in the newer version, but like the close up of the first.
ReplyDeleteOOooooooh! I LOVE how delicate your work is. The tent and the lighting effect is gorgeous! Well done! Thank you for your kind visit so that I may view yours!
ReplyDeleteWow wonderful illustration! I prefer the new one! I do redo pieces, sometimes I completely paint over them, other times fix them or add to them! I like the proportion on the new one! It's a bit more vivid too! Either way you are a wonderful artist!
